A building plan often begins with the shape of the house. On a sloping site near Omaha, the more useful starting question was where that house would sit in relation to the higher ground, the usable flat area, the driveway and the view beyond it.

Position and height before decoration

In a written residential design consultation, several decisions were considered together. The suggested building position shifted slightly forward from the initial drawing while still using the nearby ridge as backing. The proposed height was reviewed against the land, rather than chosen from the floor plan alone. The small flatter area to the front was considered for a more generous, level courtyard. The driveway’s approach and bend also mattered because arriving at a home is a spatial sequence, not simply the location of a garage door.

Orientation is measured after the plan settles

Orientation was considered as part of this whole-site study. A preliminary direction connected the proposed house position with a prominent landscape feature in the distance. The original advice was explicit that an exact measurement would need to be taken on site after the architectural design was finalised. A preliminary compass direction is a design hypothesis; publishing it as though it were a completed final setting would misrepresent the work.

Courtyard, planting and arrival

The landscape advice likewise dealt with usable space and protection. Planting on the sides and shaping the courtyard boundary were considered as ways to create a more sheltered setting around an elevated home. Planting has to be placed at workable distances, and grading or a new driveway route depends on design feasibility. The consultation called for discussion with the architect, landscape designer and relevant authorities before turning those ideas into built changes.

A practical sequence for site planning

This is a practical way to apply the traditional ideas of 势 (the broader lie of the land), 形 (the actual built and natural forms) and 向 (orientation). First observe terrain and routes. Then test how each proposal changes the use of the site. Finally measure and refine the orientation in the context of a design that can actually be built.

What is known about the result

The surviving record is a set of recommendations, not a verified before-and-after outcome. It still offers a useful lesson for anyone choosing a site or commissioning a new house in the Auckland region: the position of the home, its height, its outdoor room, its access and its orientation belong in the same conversation.

If you have a sloping site, review those relationships while the drawings can still change.
